Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after I submit my application?
Once both completed application forms are received by the Town of Newmarket, it will be reviewed by staff. You should expect to receive notification of your qualification within 10 business days.
Why do I need to sign the Waste Collection Service Waiver Form?

A Town of Newmarket employee, agent or contractor will need to enter your property and this waiver gives the person permission. It also shows the legal responsibilities between you and the Town of Newmarket.

How long can I participate in the Assisted Waste Collection Service?
Once an application is approved, it will be subject to an annual review and the service may be terminated if the conditions noted in the application form no longer apply. If you no longer need the service, you must contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.
What can be picked up by the Town's waste contractor as part of this service?
  • Blue Box Recycling
  • Green Bin Organics
  • Garbage
  • Leaf and Yard Waste
What happens if my collection is missed?
If you believe that your collection has been missed, please contact Green for Life (GFL) at 1-866-421-5625 or email [email protected]. You can also view waste collection updates on GFL's Waste Collection Status webpage.
Does assisted collection continue during the winter?
Yes. During the winter, please ensure the path to your collection spot is clear of ice and snow so that the collector can safely access and collect waste containers.

Waste Exemption Program

The Waste Exemption Program is available to Newmarket residents who regularly need to set out additional garbage, generated as a result of a medical condition, that cannot be disposed of in the regular three bag/container collection limit collected every other week.

Once approved, a supply of garbage tags are provided at no cost. Applications are accepted throughout the year and can be renewed annually.

Please note that only non-hazardous medical waste can be set out for curbside garbage collection. Please double bag these items before placing in the garbage:

  • Dialysis waste (e.g. filters, disposable towels & sheets)
  • IV bags & tubing, gastric & nasal tubes
  • Soiled dressing, sponges and gauze
  • Catheters
  • Ostomy bags (please empty contents prior to disposal)

Hazardous waste such as sharps, needles, syringes, lancets, injectors and pre-filled pens are to be placed in an approved, puncture-proof container and dropped off at a local participating pharmacy or a York Region Household Hazardous Waste Depot. There is no curbside collection for these items.
