Ontario Public Works Association: Project of the Year for Structures under $2 million

The Gorham Street Watermain Project was named the 2018 Project of the Year in the ‘Structures less than $2 million category’ from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA). The award was officially presented to the Town of Newmarket at the OPWA Annual Conference and Awards Luncheon on January 24, 2019.
The Gorham Street Watermain Replacement Project was awarded the 2018 Project of the Year for its excellent project management techniques and innovative technologies that focused on minimizing active construction and traffic disruptions in a sensitive area. In addition, this project demonstrated strong community relations with residents, which included open, two-way communications between the Town and neighbouring parties.

AVA Digital Awards for the Communications/Marketing videos for the 2018 Municipal Election

The Town of Newmarket received three 2019 AVA Digital Awards for their in-house digital marketing and communication materials for used to help promote the 2018 Municipal Election. The 2019 AVA Digital Awards include:
E.A. Danby Award: Solar-Powered Smart Bench Project

Newmarket received the E.A. Danby Award for their Solar-Powered Smart Bench Project from the Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) in the category of Municipal Administration - Municipal Population 20,000 or more.
Newmarket’s Downtown Solar-powered Smart Bench Network Project focuses on using the most common piece of public park furniture and transforming it into a data gathering device for the Town to make more informed decisions. The soofa solar benches network (SSB) collects data hourly by passively listening for Wi-Fi enabled devices and records how many devices were in the vicinity of the bench. No personal information is collected. Any data gathered is encrypted and remains completely anonymous. The encrypted data collected from the soofa benches can be used to assist with event planning, public works resource allocations (garbage pick-up, street cleaning etc.), security requirements, future capital spending decisions (parking).

Roger Brown Award: National Public Works Week

Newmarket received the Roger Brown Award from the Ontario Public Works Association for its excellent educational programs during last year's National Public Works Week.
The Roger Brown Award is given to one Ontario municipality with a population of 150,000 or less and is committed to:
Promoting excellence in programs and events which create awareness of the public works profession
Illustrating the important role that all public works employees play in the everyday health and well-being of the public
The award was officially presented to the Town of Newmarket at the 2019 National Public Works Week annual kick-off event at the Mohawk Racetrack in Guelph, Ontario on May 16.

Health Water Award from the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority

The Town of Newmarket was awarded a Healthy Water Award at the 2019 Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Awards ceremony which took place on November 7, 2019. The Town was recognized for its commitment to more environmentally friendly winter maintenance practices.
Each year the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) celebrates ‘Watershed Heroes’ through a Healthy Water Award. ‘Watershed Heroes’ are individuals and or organizations that engage in positive environmental actions. These actions help clean up Lake Simcoe, restore the banks of our rivers and streams, improve the health of our soil, conserve precious water resources and contribute to healthier communities.
