Marriage Licences are issued at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive) as follows:
Monday - Thursday, 9:00 - 11:30 am and 2:30 - 4:00 pm (unavailable 11:30 - 2:30 pm)
Friday 9:00 - 11:30 am

Congratulations, you're Getting Married!
To make it legal you'll need a valid Ontario marriage licence before your civil or religious marriage ceremony. You can purchase your marriage licence from the Town of Newmarket or another Ontario municipality with the authority to issue marriage licences. A marriage licence is valid only for marriages taking place in Ontario and expires three (3) months from the date of issue.
To get your licence you'll need to complete a copy of the marriage licence application form. Please ensure the form has original signatures by both applicants.
Both you and your partner will need to complete this form and submit it during your in-person appointment. In addition to this form, we will need each person's supporting identification documents and a licensing fee of $158.98, payable by Interac, Visa, Mastercard or American Express. For applicants who don't live in Newmarket the
licensing fee is $174.88. We encourage both of you to attend together, however, if only one person can attend they will need the proper documents for the absent person. If all the supporting documents are present at the time of your application, the licence will be issued in about 30 minutes. The Town offers a fee of
$588.22 + HST ($664.69) for any couple that wishes to obtain their marriage licence and hold a civil marriage ceremony with the Town's Officiant
Supporting Identification Documents
Here's what we'll need when you come in to get your licence:
Two (2) pieces of original and current government-issued identification for each person getting married. One piece of identification must include your photo.
The first piece of identification must be one of the following:
- Birth Certificate, (with any applicable change of Name certificate)
- Current Passport
- Record of Immigrant Landing
- Canadian Citizenship Card
The second piece of identification must be photo identification, which can be one of the following:
- Driver's Licence
- Passport (providing it is not used as the first piece of identification)

Provincial photo I.D.

Any other Canadian government-issued photo I.D.
Note: If previously married, an original or court-certified copy of the decree absolute or an original Certificate of Divorce is required. Divorce judgements and orders are not acceptable, nor are photocopies.
Is my expired licence still valid?During ordinary times, a marriage licence is only valid for 3 months after it is issued. But these are extraordinary times and the Government of Ontario has extended the validity period for certain licences issued.
If the following conditions are met:
- It has not been used (i.e., the couple has not married each other),
- Neither party has married anyone else, and
- Neither party has legally changed their name.
Then, please note the following:
- Licences issued between December 1, 2019 and July 24, 2020 are valid until July 24, 2022.
- Licences issued between October 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 are valid until February 10, 2023.
- Licenses issued between January 1, 2021 and June 4, 2021 are valid until June 4, 2023.
Note: Licences issued between July 25, 2020 and September 30, 2020 have not been extended. These licences were only valid for three months from the date issued since there was no province-wide emergency during this timeframe.
