Low Impact Development and Stormwater Management

Stormwater Management (SWM) aims to protect the community and the environment from stormwater runoff, created by rain and snow melt events, by controlling stormwater quality and quantity. Before infrastructure development, water would be absorbed into the ground after it rains.

After infrastructure development, hard surfaces like roofs, driveways, roads, and parking lots prevent absorption, increasing the amount of water collected by storm drains. Before stormwater reaches the storm system, stormwater flows over these hard surfaces, accumulating debris, chemicals, and other pollutants that can have a negative impact on surrounding aquatic ecosystems. Once the stormwater reaches the storm sewer system, water flows through a large, complex network of pipes and waterways until its eventual release back into the natural environment.

The Town aims to use Low Impact Development (a form of stormwater management) to manage stormwater in Newmarket. View the links below to learn more about Stormwater Management and Low Impact Development and Green Infrastructure in Newmarket.

Take extra caution around Stormwater Ponds

Newmarket has over 65 stormwater management facilities in Town, including more than 50 stormwater management ponds, which store and treat rainwater. Many of the stormwater managment ponds are designed to prevent flooding, erosion and improve the quality of water before it is gradually released back into the nearest stream or river. Please take extra caution around these bodies of water and remind children to not play in the area. Stay off of any stormwater pond as they are not safe for use.

The ponds may look safe, but it's what's below the surface that makes them different from regular ponds. As a result, water flow and water levels can fluctuate quickly without warning.

Activities like skating, fishing, swimming or tobogganing are not allowed on any body of water in Newmarket. Please do not dump unwanted fish or aquarium pets in the stormwater ponds.

Let's all do our part and protect the environment from the negative effects of stormwater.
